Tom first started his tenure as a gas attendant at a local shop in Brick NJ Called Walt's Sunoco when he was in high school. This is where Tom first was exposed to automotive repair and at the age of 16 he overhauled his first engine in a 1964 Volkswagen Beetle. Although Tom liked automotive studies he did not fall in love with it yet and he pursued an education in Electrical Engineering. It wasn't until 1984 while working at a small but reputable repair shop in Spring Lake Heights that Tom finally saw the light of his passion. By this time he had a strong hobby in electronics and with the added education of electrical engineering he quickly became an electrical specialist. Around this same time Tom started working on and eventually became the Crew Chief of a NASCAR Modified racing team and the balance of Automotive Engineering was brought to his skill set. His fate was sealed and he gained a reputation of being able to fix anything. Later in the 1980's Tom realize that not only was he a good technician but he also had the ability to teach the trade to others and he embarked on a technical training career as well as working as a full time technician. 1990 was a milestone year for Tom as he was offered a position in a growing Ford dealership as a diagnostic technician.
Although Tom worked as general technician at the dealership he quickly became known for fixing the unfixable and eventually was elevated to a lead technician position and "go to guy" for hard to fix concerns. Also that same year, Tom formed his own automotive technical training company "Petty Diagnostics and Technical Services" which grew into a second full time job training hundreds of his peers to be better technicians. In 1993 Tom received a runner up award of excellence from Ford Motor Company and in 1994 he receive the highest level award and it was presented to him by the Vice President of Ford while on a cruise to the Bahamas. Although it took more than a decade, Tom earned the highest level of Ford Certification, "Senior Master Technician", attained by few. Tom has also been an ASE Master Technician with an Advanced Engine Performance certification for decades. On February 1st of 2014 Tom formed Petty Motorworks LLC with the intent to start a family business and quickly grew this business working part time for family, friends and neighbors. On April 30, 2016 Tom retired after over 25 years of service to the same dealership and on May 9th, with tears of joy and his family beside him, he opened the doors of Petty Motorworks LLC in Waretown NJ. Petty Motorworks now lives in a renovated 50's era service station. In it's short tenure it has grown to Tom leading two service advisors, three full time, and two part time technicians. He is extremely proud of the service that Petty Motorworks and all of his staff bring to the Waretown area and looks forward to what the future has in store for him and his family.
